business, the only constant is change; contrarily, people are naturally resistant to change. This combination makes it logical for any leader or manger to expect both conflict and change often in the workplace.
  1. Types

    • Effective leaders anticipate the types of change and conflict that may be encountered. Changes often come as new ventures or restructuring within an organization. Conflict can come from these sources or be related to personal relationships between coworkers.

    Solutions

    • Knowing individuals are resistant to change, competent leaders define an end goal and relinquish some ownership over the issue. Peter Bregman of the Harvard Business Review even advocates allowing resistance and alternate ideas, as long as the goal is achieved.

    Other Considerations

    • Conflict may arise whether changes are occurring or not. Able leaders develop conflict resolution strategies that are considerate of the differences between individuals that make up the group. The ability to build consensus and find compromise are critical skills in easing office tensions.

    Warning

    • Leading a group through times of conflict or change requires a balance between humility and confidence. Effective leaders are cautious of being overly accommodating and losing site of the organization's goals. Conversely, they realize that some concessions may be required in order to build group loyalty.
